Dr. Ray O’Connor discusses the latest clinical papers on Cardiovascular Disease (CVD). Deprescribing medication in older and frailer patients can simplify drug regimens and reduce adverse effects, as shown in the OPTiMISE trial. Antihypertensive deprescribing in patients aged 80 and over showed no increase in hospitalization or mortality. Nursing home residents who underwent antihypertensive deprescribing experienced less cognitive decline. A study in Sweden found that different hormone therapy combinations had varying effects on cardiovascular risk. Extending cardiovascular risk prediction beyond 10 years using biomarkers like CRP, LDL cholesterol, and lipoprotein(a) may be beneficial for primary prevention.
