Patients with autoimmune or musculoskeletal diseases who achieve at least 5% weight loss through medication or surgery experience significant improvements in patient-reported outcomes, according to data presented at ACR Convergence 2024. The study analyzed data from the FORWARD Databank and included patients using weight loss therapies such as GLP-1 agonists and bariatric surgery. Results showed that 5% weight loss was associated with improvements in pain, fatigue, patient activity scale, and other outcomes. The findings suggest that medication-assisted weight loss therapy may benefit patients with obesity regardless of their underlying condition. Further research is needed to explore these findings in randomized controlled trials.
