A study found that over 54% of patients with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases use daily over-the-counter supplements, often alongside pain relievers, posing a risk for dangerous drug interactions. The researchers surveyed patients in England and found that the most commonly used supplements were vitamin D, multivitamins, and vitamin C. There was considerable overlap between the use of pain relievers and supplements. Healthcare professionals need to be aware of these self-management strategies and provide reliable advice to patients on the potential risks and benefits of using supplements with conventional medications to manage symptoms of pain, sleep, and fatigue.
