New guidance from the Royal College of General Practice specifies that Physician associates (PAs) in general practice must only see patients triaged by a GP and only undertake tasks delegated by their named GP supervisor. PAs can take histories, perform physical examinations, and create diagnostic and management plans, which must be shared with the supervisor either simultaneously or at a “hot review” at the end of the session. The BMA also outlined a similar scope of practice for PAs, emphasizing that the GP supervisor’s review should take place before the patient leaves the practice. This ensures patient safety and effective collaboration between PAs and GPs.
