Wider adoption of value-based care (VBC) has the potential to lower costs and improve outcomes for patients, providers, and payers. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has led efforts to drive VBC adoption through specialty programs like the GUIDE Model. Despite some success, challenges remain in transitioning from fee-for-service to VBC models. The COVID-19 pandemic caused patient behavior shifts that impacted both VBC and fee-for-service providers. To advance VBC, there is a need for innovation in areas like PCP-to-specialist collaboration, patient engagement, and new arrangements with payers. Multispecialty models and collaboration between stakeholders are crucial for the future of VBC.
