Poor sleep during pregnancy, specifically sleeping less than seven hours daily, can result in neurodevelopmental delays in children. A study conducted in China followed 7059 mother-child pairs and found that inadequate sleep in mothers was linked to an increased risk of cognitive, behavioral, and learning issues in their offspring. Boys were found to be at a higher risk than girls for these delays. The researchers suggest that poor sleep may impact the mother’s glucose metabolism, affecting fetal insulin secretion and neurodevelopment.
