The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) recently conducted a survey on physician associates (PAs) in general practice and received feedback on their roles and supervision. The college initially proposed guidelines for working with PAs, which caused controversy as some felt that PAs were not working safely. After a council meeting, the RCGP voted that there is no role for PAs in general practice, raising questions on liability and the future of current PAs. Suggestions include encouraging PAs to pursue medical training or finding alternative roles for them. The origins of support for PAs within medical leadership are also being questioned.
