Long-COVID, a condition with symptoms lasting for months after SARS-CoV-2 infection, affects 10-20% of people. Researchers discovered a similar condition, “long flu,” causing long-term negative health effects in people hospitalized with seasonal influenza. A study compared the risks of death, hospital admissions, and adverse health outcomes for COVID-19 and flu patients. They found that patients hospitalized for both infections had increased risk of death, hospital readmission, and organ system issues in the 18 months following infection. COVID-19 patients faced 50% higher risk of death than flu patients. The study underscores the high toll of death and loss of health after hospitalization for COVID-19 or seasonal influenza, with long-term health risks.
