Irish researchers have developed a new implant that uses electronic signals to aid spinal cord injury repair. Currently, it is difficult to promote neuron regrowth after such injuries. The implantable 3D-printed scaffold, developed by RCSI and AMBER researchers, can bridge the gap at the injury site and boost axon regrowth when electrical stimulation is applied. The researchers collaborated with the IRFU-CT and a spinal cord injury advisory group to guide the research. This innovative approach shows promising potential for the treatment of spinal cord injuries and was recently presented at the TERMIS World Congress and published in the journal ‘Materials Today’.
