Researchers at the University of Galway have developed a portable device for testing water quality to detect a dangerous pathogen, Shiga toxigenic Escherichia coli (STEC). The technology is accurate and sensitive, providing quick results. The research found 61% of water samples in Galway positive for the pathogen. STEC, commonly found in healthy animals, can cause severe illnesses in humans if ingested. The device can be helpful in preventing outbreaks and ensuring the safety of drinking water, especially for those relying on private groundwater wells. The study was funded by the Environment Protection Agency and published in the journal Microbiology.
