The University of Massachusetts Amherst and Tufts Medical Center are conducting a study with a $4.74 million grant from NIDA to provide HIV prevention, diagnosis, and treatment for incarcerated individuals with opioid use disorders in Boston. Dr. Elizabeth Evans and Dr. Alysse Wurcel are leading the research to improve access to HIV care in justice settings. The study aims to increase HIV testing and treatment for incarcerated individuals, as well as offer pre-exposure HIV medications. Initial activities include the development of an intervention program called ID-TOUCH and examining its feasibility and acceptability. The study may serve as a model for HIV treatment and prevention programs nationwide.
