A study published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology found that transgender individuals face double the risk of severe liver disease and a higher share of cirrhosis from heavy drinking compared to the general population. The study looked at 15 years of health data from 330,000 cirrhosis patients and found that alcohol was the most prevalent cause of cirrhosis in transgender patients. The study also found that transgender individuals with cirrhosis were more likely to report female gender and had higher rates of depression and anxiety. Transgender individuals with end-stage liver disease had similar rates of transplantation and five-year survival probabilities after transplant, suggesting the importance of early intervention and prevention in this population.
