In a study presented at the Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, researchers found that both insufficient and excessive sleep can lead to damage to small blood vessels in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Short sleep duration (less than seven hours) was linked to a 2.6 times higher risk of microvascular disease, while long sleep duration (nine hours or more) was associated with a 2.3 times higher risk. The study also showed that the risk of microvascular complications increases with age, with individuals over 62 who experience short sleep having a 5.7 times higher risk. More research is needed to understand the effects of poor sleep on diabetics.
