Study Uncovers Brain Mechanism Behind Fertility Decline

Obesity has been linked to a decrease in fertility, with a recent study showing that it causes chronic changes in the brain that affect sperm count. The research led by the University of California-Riverside found that obese mice had lower testosterone levels and reduced sperm count due to dysregulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis. These brain changes result in a reduction in neuronal connections and synapses. The study suggested that these effects may also be present in humans. The researchers plan to further study if these brain changes can be reversed by switching mice from a high-fat diet to a normal one, potentially helping people struggling with weight loss.
