Researchers at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio have developed a humanized mouse model with a human immune system and gut microbiome. Led by Paolo Casali, the team aimed to create a model with a fully functional human immune system to overcome limitations of current models. This breakthrough, detailed in an upcoming publication in Nature Immunology, enables the mice to develop mature immune responses akin to humans. Named TruHuX (THX) mice, they show potential for studying human diseases, immunotherapeutics, and vaccines. The model is now being used to study responses to COVID-19 and explore factors influencing antibody production and immune cell differentiation.
