A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal suggests that implementing human papillomavirus (HPV)-based screening in British Columbia could eliminate cervical cancer in the province before 2040. HPV causes more than 90% of cervical cancer cases worldwide, and the World Health Organization and the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer have set targets to eliminate cervical cancer by 2040. HPV-based screening shows better accuracy in detecting cervical precancer and can be performed on samples collected by the patient. The study suggests that phased-in HPV testing by age could help reduce the burden on health care systems and increase access to screening services.
