A study published in the BMJ found that the use of epidural during childbirth can reduce the risk of maternal complications post-delivery. The research showed a 35% relative risk reduction in severe maternal morbidity (SMM) in women who received epidural, with even greater reductions seen in women with a medical indication for epidural and those delivering preterm. The study analyzed data from over half a million mothers in Scotland between 2007 and 2019. The researchers believe the benefits of epidural come from closer monitoring during labor and the ability to quickly intervene if needed. They recommend promoting access to epidural for women at risk.
