A study showed that an annual COVID-19 vaccination campaign with a second dose for at-risk populations reduced disease burden and health care costs by over $3 billion in a year. The optimal time interval between doses was found to be around 5 months, with possible range of 3 to 6 months. The study, led by Chad R. Wells, PhD, from Yale School of Public Health, suggests that a synchronized vaccination campaign against SARS-CoV-2 before an anticipated surge could reduce disease burden similar to influenza vaccination. Different age groups were considered for second doses, with prioritizing adults aged 18 to 49 years or 50 to 64 years showing more cost-effectiveness.
