William “Ian” Jones was born in Tregaron, Cardiganshire, and studied medicine in Cardiff. After completing two years of national service in Singapore, he began a career in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) medicine under the guidance of Don Harrison at the Royal National Throat, Nose, and Ear Hospital. He earned his fellowship in 1964 and continued to work in London. In December 1965, he was seconded as a researcher and lecturer to Kingston University, Jamaica, where he worked for 15 months. Throughout his career, Jones faced challenges, including the vaccination programme during a smallpox outbreak in Singapore.
