Special counsel Robert Hur’s report on President Biden’s handling of classified documents focused on the President’s age and alleged memory issues. Medical professionals are skeptical of armchair diagnoses. Memory and aging expert Joel Kramer noted that memory decline with age is not inevitable, and that memory issues in older age do not necessarily indicate underlying conditions or cognitive impairment. Different kinds of memory and ways that older people compensate for memory problems were addressed. Kramer suggested that the criticism of Biden’s memory is political and influenced by cultural bias against aging. There are no certain rules about how memory changes with age, and patients can be impaired in different memory systems with various symptoms.
