Recent research suggests that the atypical antipsychotic cariprazine may play a potential role in treating anxiety, which is a commonly overlooked symptom in bipolar I disorder. The drug does not have typical metabolic side effects seen with other medications in its class, making it a promising treatment for anxiety in patients with bipolar disorder. A post hoc analysis of data from two trials showed that cariprazine effectively alleviates bipolar depression and improves symptoms of anxiety. Researchers believe that further research is needed to confirm these findings. Another recent study showed that switching from aripiprazole to cariprazine helped improve mood and mitigate weight gain in patients. This study also highlighted the need for more research into treatment options for symptoms of anxiety in bipolar disorder.
