A recent study suggests that assisted reproductive technology (ART), a potential mediator between BMI and twin births, explains 23% of the association in obese women with a BMI of 30-40. The study involved over half a million deliveries and found an increased proportion of ART in women with higher BMIs. The rate of twin deliveries was also significantly higher in women who used ART. Researchers also found that ART did not explain the association for women with class III obesity (BMI ≥ 40). Although high BMI increases the risk of twin pregnancy, the absolute rate of twins remains low. There are risks associated with twin pregnancies for both mothers and infants. Additional factors including race, economic status, and access to healthcare may influence health outcomes and should be considered in individual patient care.
