Race-Based PFT Equations May Exclude Patients From ILD Treatments, Trials

A study published in the Annals of the American Thoracic Society found that using race-specific equations for pulmonary function tests (PFT) in patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD) may lead to disparities in eligibility for antifibrotic therapy, clinical trials, and lung transplant referrals. Researchers compared different PFT reference equations and found that the use of race-neutral equations could more accurately assess eligibility in Black, Hispanic/Latino, and White patients with ILD. The study underscored the importance of refining PFT equations to promote health equity and accurately reflect the pulmonary function of diverse patient populations.
