Moderate vitamin E, C, and β-carotene intake reduces type 2 diabetes risk

A recent study published in Advances in Nutrition reviewed the effects of vitamins C, E, and β-carotene on the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Previous analyses have shown a protective effect of β-carotene and vitamin E, but not vitamin C, against T2D. The study considered various studies to investigate the relationship between dietary intake of these vitamins and T2D incidence. The Mediterranean diet, high in fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants, has been associated with reduced T2D risk. While individual vitamin supplementation did not show significant benefits, a moderate intake of vitamins C, E, and β-carotene is recommended to prevent T2D.
