Dietary Choices Are Linked to Higher Rates of Preeclampsia Among Latinas

A study conducted by researchers at USC Keck School of Medicine found that diet based on cultural food preferences, such as vegetables, fruits, and healthy oils, can help reduce the risk of preeclampsia in pregnant Latinas. The study compared traditional dietary habits to the Healthy Eating Index-2015 and found that cultural foods had a stronger correlation with lower rates of preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a dangerous high blood pressure condition that affects about 5% of pregnancies in the U.S. Rates have been increasing, especially among Black and Pacific Islander residents. The study suggests that dietary recommendations for pregnant Latinas should consider incorporating cultural foods for better health outcomes.
