PCOS Patients At More Than 8-Fold Increased Risk Of Suicide Attempts: Study Says

Patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) have an increased risk of suicide attempts, with a study finding an eight-fold higher risk compared to those without the condition. PCOS affects around 10% of women and is associated with increased production of male sex hormones, causing infertility, acne, hirsutism, and obesity. It is also linked to cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. The study, analyzing over 18,000 women with PCOS, found a significant increase in suicide risk, even after accounting for various factors. The findings emphasize the need for routine monitoring of mental health in PCOS patients, as the condition’s challenges may compound existing mental health issues. Stigma related to PCOS further adds to the burden of the condition.
