Novel genetic locations associated with primary open-angle glaucoma identified

An international study has identified new genetic locations associated with primary open-angle glaucoma. It uses multiancestry biobanks and millions of samples from around the world. The findings, published in Cell Reports Medicine, detail ancestry and sex-specific genetic loci associated with POAG. It identified 17 new genetic loci associated with glaucoma, five of which were specific to certain ancestries. The research also implicated vascular and cancer genes in POAG risk and highlighted the need for more diverse representation in biobanks. The study had a global collaboration and the researchers hope to continue expanding and making new discoveries in the future.
