Reconstructing family trees of blood cells may help predict disease

The human blood system undergoes a constant turnover, and different blood cells have varying lifespans. Stem cells in the bone marrow replenish these cells. Researchers have developed a technique called ReDeeM to trace and monitor the blood cell family tree, shedding light on the changes in the stem cells that lead to loss of diversity as people age. The method is efficient and enables scientists to predict a diverse range of diseases by a simple blood draw. The genes and pathways that affect blood cell production are also identified, contributing to an understanding of blood cancers.
