Provider empathy may improve patient satisfaction, but more research is needed

A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that practitioner empathy was associated with greater patient satisfaction in 14 randomized clinical trials. The researchers, led by Leila Keshtkar, PhD, from the University of Leicester, identified a positive change in patient satisfaction related to practitioner empathy. However, the studies had limitations, such as heterogeneity in location and setting, a high risk of bias in some studies, and poorly described training interventions. The researchers emphasized the need for additional research to identify the most effective ways to train practitioners and improve patient satisfaction.
