Lung Chip Mimics Radiation Injury


Researchers at the Wyss Institute at Harvard University have developed a microfluidic chip that can simulate radiation-induced lung injury, which can limit the use of radiotherapy to treat cancer. The chip contains human lung alveolar epithelial cells interfacing with lung capillary cells, and it can recreate the alveolar-capillary interface to study the effects of radiation on these cells and test new treatments. The chip, which can be exposed to clinically relevant doses of radiation, can be used to measure the responses of the cells. This technology can help to better understand radiation-induced lung injury and develop new strategies to treat and prevent it.
