What To Avoid Before Getting a Rhinoplasty

Before undergoing rhinoplasty surgery, there are many things you need to avoid to help prevent any complications. Complications include bleeding, increased bruising and swelling and a longer recovery period. It is crucial that you are honest with your surgeon about any medications, alcohol or nicotine use prior to surgery.

There are several medications and herbal supplements that are important to stop taking two weeks before and two weeks after your rhinoplasty. In some cases medical clearance is required depending on the medication and the reason you are taking it. Our surgeons recommend stopping certain medications because they can thin your blood and increase the risk of bleeding during surgery.  If you experience any minor aches or pains before or after surgery, you may take acetaminophen (Tylenol).

Avoid over the counter medications that contain aspirin or salicylate such as:

  • Advil
  • Aspirin
  • Alka-Seltzer products
  • Aleve
  • Bayer products
  • Excerdin
  • Ibuprofen
  • Mortin
  • Menadol
  • Midol Extra Strength
  • Naproxen
  • Pepto-Bismol
  • ANY decongestant nasal sprays

Herbal Supplements To Avoid:

    • Chamomile
    • Fish Oil
    • Flax Seed
    • Garlic
    • Ginger
    • Glucosamine
    • Melatonin
    • Turmeric
    • Vitamin E

This is a general list of medications and herbal supplements, please ask your doctor about any others you may be taking.

Alcohol and Nicotine

All alcohol and/or nicotine use is crucial to stop 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after rhinoplasty surgery. Nicotine products such as smoking, nicotine patches, or nicotine gum or lozenges can causes complications during surgery and also after. Nicotine products can cause healing time to be prolonged, excessive scarring, skin cell death, reduce blood flow to nose, increased risk of infection and poor surgical results. Alcohol use can also cause bleeding, infections and the nose can swell more which increases healing time.
