Reader response: Right Brain: Withholding treatment from a child with an epileptic encephalomyopathy


I read with much interest the Resident & Fellow Right Brain article by Drs. Rothstein and Lewis.1 They presented a discussion of the ethical problems associated with the care of a child with a fatal genetic disease. In this case, there was tension between the physicians caring for the child and the UK government, which decided on supportive care only, whereas the desire of the parents was to transfer the child to an out-of-country hospital for an experimental treatment never before used in a child with this genetic disease.
