Facelift vs Micro Lift™: Which is Better and Why?

If you’re wondering which is better — a full facelift or a Micro Lift— expert facial plastic surgeon Dr. Philip Miller states that the more helpful questions are: when is a facelift the procedure that’s going to turn back the clock for you and when is a Micro Lift the better choice? Either one of these rejuvenating procedures can make a dramatic difference in how young and energized you look and feel, but each is best for a particular stage of aging.

Lift Your Face with a PonyTail

Dr. Miller encourages men and women to perform a simple “ponytail” test if they’re not sure whether to pick a Micro Lift or full facelift.  Tie your hair back into a tight ponytail and scrutinize your appearance in the mirror. Do your face and neck look more lifted, your cheeks fuller, and your eyes more open and bright?

If so, you’re probably in the early stages of aging and a Micro Lift is your best choice. Most women and men who benefit from a Micro Lift are in their 20s to 40s.

If a tight ponytail makes you look better, but you still have jowls and a sagging neck, then it’s likely time to go full-out with a beautifully performed facelift. A full facelift is usually the best choice once you are in your mid-40s and beyond.

Advantages of a Micro Lift

If you’re in the early stages of aging, passed the ponytail test, and are a good candidate for a Micro Lift, you can have a brighter, more youthful look in just an hour during the in-office procedure. Benefits you can expect include:

  • Tighter, more youthful skin
  • Fewer to no wrinkles
  • More uplifted look

Even if you suspect you might benefit more from a full facelift, you may be reluctant to undergo a surgical procedure. Maybe you can’t take the time off from work or you just don’t want general anesthesia.

A Micro Lift can be a great way to give your face a lift, no matter what your age, without drastically altering your lifestyle. Some advantages of a Micro Lift over a facelift include:

  • It only takes about an hour
  • Just a few days of “downtime”
  • Uses local anesthesia
  • Incisions are hidden in the hairline
  • The scars are virtually invisible

Even though you won’t be asleep for the Micro Lift procedure, Dr. Miller recommends arranging ahead of time for transportation home, as you may be drowsy.

Advantages of a Facelift

When the ponytail test leaves you feeling dissatisfied, you’re probably in the later stages of the aging process and will benefit most from a full rhytidectomy (facelift). This amazingly rejuvenating procedure can make you look up to 10 years younger while still appearing perfectly natural and every bit like “yourself.”

Dr. Miller uses a deep-plane method that lifts not just your skin, but the SMAS tissue layer that supports your skin. He expertly dissects the SMAS that once-upon-a-time lifted it but are now pulling it downward. By elevating and repositioning the SMAS, Dr. Miller makes your facelift look natural and rejuvenating, not “windswept” or tight.

A full facelift makes a dramatic difference in how youthful and radiant you look. Dr. Miller usually recommends combining a facelift with a necklift and platysmaplasty to tighten the neck muscles and skin, laser resurfacing to help your skin heal and produce more rejuvenating collagen, and fat grafting to compensate for facial volume lost due to the aging process.

After your facelift and neck lift, you can expect benefits such as:

  • Dramatically but naturally lifted midface
  • Tighter, sleeker, more youthful neck
  • No more jowls
  • No sagging skin
  • No more “turkey neck”
  • Fewer to no wrinkles, folds, or creases
  • Look up to 10 years younger
  • Benefits that last for 5 to 10 years … or more
  • Incisions hidden behind your ears

A facelift takes two to three hours and can be performed on an outpatient basis at Dr. Miller’s practice in New York under general or intravenous sedation. Facelifts require a much longer healing and recovery period than Micro Lifts do. Expect to be away from work and household responsibilities for at least two weeks. Arrange for transportation home after your procedure and help while you recover. You’ll continue to heal over the next six to nine months.
