Hospital Management Information System; launched in Civil Hospital, Karachi

The Sindh Health Department, in collaboration with Provincial Information Technology Department has introduced an online Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) in Dr. Ruth KM Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK).

This technology would soon be launched in more health facilities across the province of Sindh.

Additional Chief Secretary Health Sindh, Dr. Usman Chachar and Secretary IT Department Sindh, Mr. Agha Zaheer uddin Khan inaugurated the Hospital Management Information System in Sindh’s largest tertiary care hospital- CHK, for the first time in any public sector hospital of the province.

Addressing the launching ceremony of HMIS, Dr. Usman Chachar stated that paperless technology has been introduced in the hospital by upgrading HMIS.

Medical Superintendent, Dr. Ruth KM Pfau CHK, Dr. Muhammad Taufiq, added that this technology has been introduced in order to digitalize the overall system and affairs of the hospital, resulting in improved coordination between the working staff. CHK management will use this technology to maintain patient’s record, data of OPD and admitted patients, record keeping of lethal diseases, also provision of WiFi facility for visitors and patients.

He also informed that this project had been completed with the cost of Rs. 80 million.

Additional Medical Superintendent (IT) CHK , Dr. Ayub said that the launch of HMIS was a milestone for the hospital. He informed about a specific E-file module that has been established for launching a similar computerized system in Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Trauma Centre.

He also informed that about 200 digital systems (Computers and Tablets) have been installed within pharmacy, emergency, radiology, gynecology units, administrative and other departments. Doctors can check complete files of visiting and admitted patients through this new system, by just entering their medical record numbers. Dr. Ayub said that the training of doctors and other staff have already been completed to run the system.

Furthermore, he added that record keeping of newborns, deaths, OPD and in-patients status, medicines and other items would be completed through this new technology. Patients and their attendants would be given guest IDs during their stay in hospital, and will also be used to launch complaints against doctors and other helping or administrative staff through this new system.
