Is Bone Grafting Before Dental Implants Important?

Dentist showing patient dental x-raysFollowing the loss of one or more teeth, the jawbone and gum tissue no longer receive stimulus from tooth roots. Without this stimulus, the body reroutes nutrients to other areas, which leads to diminished jawbone density and gum tissue volume over time. Before placing one or more dental implants, we may need to provide a bone or soft tissue graft in order to ensure the dental implant post will successfully fuse with the supportive structures to anchor your replacement tooth or teeth. In this post, we’ll discuss the types of bone grafts and why they may be necessary prior to the placement of dental implants.

What is Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is a procedure used to improve the density, size, or shape of supportive bone structure. Typically, this treatment is performed in preparation for the placement of one or more dental implant posts. The most common forms of bone graft include:

  • Socket preservation – after a tooth is extracted, a bone graft may be placed to preserve bone density for future implant placement
  • Sinus lift – to reduce the size of the sinus cavity above the mouth and provide greater amounts of bone structure for an upper implant post
  • Ridge augmentation – is the replacement of lost bone structure, either in width or height, prior to implant placement
  • Nerve repositioning – prior to implantation, nerve structure may need to be repositioned, and a bone graft is placed to fill the empty space

Why is Bone Grafting Necessary?

We may need to place a bone graft prior to dental implant tooth replacement due to diminished jawbone density, need to position the implant in a specific location for cosmetic or functional reasons, and to repair defects in the bone due to injury or infection. In some cases, we can simply change the position of the dental implants themselves to make the most of the densest areas of the jawbone, but when this isn’t possible, we’ll recommend a bone graft to improve chances for successful implantation.
