Learn about the causes and symptoms of abdominal pain from your Houston gastroenterologist.
Abdominal pain is a very common problem; most people will, at some point in their life, experience discomfort in their stomach and intestinal area. Fortunately, the majority of causes for abdominal pain are not serious and can be easily treated. However, it’s important to understand the symptoms of potentially severe abdominal problems so you can seek proper treatment. Dr. Vikram Jayanty, who heads up a gastroenterology practice in Houston, TX, offers some information about abdominal pain here:
Common causes of abdominal pain
Many times, abdominal pain is acute, meaning that its onset is rapid and its course is short-lived. This is usually due to gas, indigestion or constipation. Identifying the source of these problems – usually a food intolerance – typically resolves the issue. Stomach viruses, often called the “stomach flu,” can also produce short term abdominal pain.
Ongoing abdominal discomfort may be due to gallbladder inflammation, gastric ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome or pelvic inflammatory disease. Your Houston gastroenterologist will evaluate the history of your pain and perform a series of tests to determine the problem. In these cases, medication and dietary changes usually bring relief to most patients, although surgery may be necessary in some cases.
When to contact your doctor
If your abdominal pain is accompanied by dehydration, fever, painful urination, or an inability to keep food down, and lasts for more than 2 days, contact your Houston gastroenterologist for treatment. It’s also important to have your abdominal pain evaluated if it’s brought on by an injury. Emergency medical help should be sought for abdominal pain that occurs during pregnancy or includes bloody or black stools.
As you can see, abdominal pain is a complex problem that warrants medical evaluation. If you’ve been experiencing abdominal pain, call the gastroenterology practice of Dr. Vikram Jayanty for an appointment.
